Chapter Overview

Parables of the kingdom and the calming of the storm.

Jesus teaches in parables from a boat. The parable of the Sower describes four types of soil — wayside, stony, thorny, and good ground — illustrating responses to God's word. He follows with the parables of the lamp under a basket, the growing seed, and the mustard seed. After explaining that He spoke in parables so that the truth would be revealed to those with ears to hear, Jesus crosses the Sea of Galilee with His disciples. A great windstorm arises, and the terrified disciples wake Jesus. He rebukes the wind and sea — "Peace, be still!" — and asks them, "Why are you so fearful? How is it that you have no faith?"
