Chapter Overview

The Twelve are appointed; the unforgivable sin warning.

Jesus heals a man with a withered hand on the Sabbath, prompting the Pharisees and Herodians to begin plotting His death. After withdrawing by the sea and healing many, Jesus goes up a mountain and appoints twelve apostles — naming Simon as Peter, James and John as the "Sons of Thunder," and including Judas Iscariot. Scribes from Jerusalem accuse Jesus of casting out demons by Beelzebub; He responds with the parable of a divided kingdom and warns about blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. The chapter closes with Jesus redefining family: "Whoever does the will of God is My brother and My sister and mother."
