Chapter Overview

Three dramatic miracles: the Gerasene demoniac, the woman with the issue of blood, and Jairus' daughter.

Jesus crosses the sea and meets a violent demon-possessed man in the country of the Gadarenes. The demons ("Legion, for we are many") enter a herd of about 2,000 swine that rush into the sea and drown. The restored man is told to go home and tell his friends what the Lord has done. Back across the sea, Jairus, a synagogue ruler, begs Jesus to heal his dying daughter. On the way, a woman with a twelve-year hemorrhage secretly touches Jesus' garment and is healed; Jesus calls her out so she can publicly receive His commendation: "Daughter, your faith has made you well." Jesus then arrives at Jairus' house and raises the twelve-year-old girl with the words "Talitha, cumi" — "Little girl, I say to you, arise."
