Chapter Overview

Feeding the 4,000, the leaven of the Pharisees, Peter's confession, the cost of discipleship.

Jesus feeds 4,000 with seven loaves and a few small fish in a Gentile region, with seven large baskets leftover. He warns the disciples about "the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod," and they confusingly think He is talking about literal bread. After healing a blind man at Bethsaida in two stages (first seeing men as trees walking, then clearly), Jesus asks at Caesarea Philippi, "Who do men say that I am?" Peter answers, "You are the Christ." Jesus then for the first time predicts His suffering, death, and resurrection. When Peter rebukes Him, Jesus responds, "Get behind Me, Satan!" and teaches that whoever wants to follow Him must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow — for "what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?"
