Chapter Overview

Marriage and divorce, the rich young ruler, third passion prediction, blind Bartimaeus.

Jesus teaches that marriage is God's design from the beginning and divorce results from hardness of heart. He blesses little children and tells His disciples to receive the kingdom of God as a little child. A rich young ruler asks what he must do to inherit eternal life; Jesus tells him to sell what he has, give to the poor, and follow Him — but the man goes away sorrowful. Jesus then teaches that it is hard for the rich to enter the kingdom, but "with God all things are possible." After His third passion prediction, James and John ask to sit at His right and left in glory; Jesus teaches that greatness comes through servanthood: "the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many." The chapter ends with blind Bartimaeus, whose faith Jesus commends as He heals him.
