Chapter Overview
Walking in truth and love; refusing to welcome false teachers.
The Apostle John writes a brief personal letter to "the elect lady and her children" — likely a Christian woman and her household, or a local church. He rejoices to find some of her children walking in truth, and reminds them of the commandment from the beginning: that we love one another. Love means walking according to God's commandments. John warns of deceivers who have gone into the world, who do not confess that Jesus Christ came in the flesh — they are the deceiver and the antichrist. Believers must guard what they have worked for, abiding in the doctrine of Christ. Anyone who brings a different doctrine is not to be received into the home or even greeted, since to do so is to share in his evil deeds. John closes by saying he has more to write but hopes to come and speak face to face.
