Chapter Overview

The anointing at Bethany, the Last Supper, Gethsemane, Judas' betrayal, Peter's denial.

Two days before Passover, a woman anoints Jesus with costly spikenard at Simon the leper's house; Jesus says her act will be remembered wherever the gospel is preached. Judas Iscariot agrees with the chief priests to betray Him for money. At the Last Supper, Jesus institutes the bread and the cup as His body and blood of the new covenant. In Gethsemane, He prays in deep anguish, "Abba, Father… not what I will, but what You will," while the disciples sleep. Judas arrives with an armed crowd and identifies Jesus with a kiss. The disciples flee. At His trial before the high priest, Jesus declares Himself the Christ and is condemned for blasphemy. Outside, Peter denies Jesus three times before the rooster crows twice.
