Chapter Overview
Hospitality to faithful workers; standing against pride in leadership.
The Apostle John writes to his beloved friend Gaius, whom he loves "in truth." John prays that Gaius may prosper in all things and be in health, just as his soul prospers. He rejoices because Gaius walks in truth and shows generous hospitality to traveling missionaries — even strangers — sending them on their journey in a manner worthy of God. By contrast, John names Diotrephes, "who loves to have the preeminence," who refuses to receive John's messengers, speaks against the apostles with malicious words, and even casts out of the church those who do welcome them. John promises to address this when he comes. Demetrius, in contrast, has a good testimony from everyone and from the truth itself. The letter closes with John's hope to come and speak face to face, and a greeting to friends by name.
